Through a variety of different initiatives, we are working to raise the labor standards for all domestic workers, including housekeepers, nannies, homecare and eldercare workers -- groups whose work is often invisible and not afforded the same protections as other workers.
We are doing this by organizing and innovating at the state and local level with different ground breaking campaigns:
NDWA works to gain labor protections for domestic workers by winning domestic worker "Bills of Rights" at the state level, pushing for regulatory changes at the national level, and through the International Labor Organization at the global level. Historically, domestic workers have been left out of the labor protections given to other workers. We are correcting this historic wrong.
At NDWA we are not only aiming to change the way domestic work is viewed and valued, but we are also creating new leaders in our labor movement. Our workforce development programs empower domestic workers -- women workers who are often silenced -- to speak up, become leaders in their communities, and make positive change for themselves and others.
Our Social Innovations initiative aims to raise labor standards for domestic workers by partnering with the private sector to center domestic worker’s voices and the leadership of women of color in the conversation about the future of the economy.
Beyond Survival launched in 2013 and seeks to build the capacity of our affiliates and their communities to respond to human trafficking of domestic workers. Through worker-led organizing that links human trafficking to worker rights, immigrant rights, gender equity and racial justice, we are working to end human trafficking in the U.S. and around the world.
Every eight seconds, an American turns 65. In the coming years, more and more members of our communities will need care, just as more and more workers will need quality, dignified jobs. At a time when we desperately need new jobs and new solutions to persistent crises in care, a broad coalition of people from all walks of life are coming together to push for change. Visit the Caring Across Generations campaign website to learn more about this exciting and necessary campaign.
We Belong Together is an initiative of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, with the participation of women’s organizations, immigrant rights groups, children, and families across the country. It is a campaign to mobilize women in support of common-sense immigration reform that will keep families together and empower women. Learn more at webelongtogether.org.
